Basavanna dared to speak truth, despite threats: Rahul Gandhi

Kudala Sangama: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid rich tributes to 12th century reformer Basavanna on his birth anniversary at Basava Kalyana, on Sunday, stating that the social reformer laid the strong foundation for Hindustan’s democracy and parliamentary democracy.

Sporting Vibhuti on his forehead – after visiting Basavanna’s resting place at Kudala Sangama – Rahul Gandhi observed that Basavanna – founder of the Lingayat sect – was a torchbearer to the superstitions that were blindly followed in the society. He was like a light that dispelled the darkness of superstition and blind worship in the society, Rahul Gandhi said.
He further said that throughout his life, Basavanna challenged caste, creed and system and instead advocated the people to follow truth in their life. He practiced what he preached and that’s what makes him the true social reformer, he added. “It is easy to question others than questioning the self. What is more challenging is to speak the truth. But Basavanna dared to do so, despite threats to his life. That’s why he is worshipped even today,” he observed.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Kudala Sangama, one of the prominent pilgrim centres of Lingayat community, is being viewed as an attempt to seek the community’s support – that has been the major votebank of BJP – ahead of Assembly elections on May 10.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi visited Sangameshwara temple and the Aikya Mantapa or the resting place of Basavanna.
