Bengaluru: Channagiri MLA Madal Virupakshappa who is a prime accused in a corruption case in Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited was arrested by Lokayukta police near Tumakuru on Monday.
Madal Virupakshappa was named in the case after his son Prashanth Madal was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh from a complainant Shreyas Kashyap for supplying raw materials to the KSDL of which MLA Virupakshappa was the chairman. Prashanth Madal, a chief accountant officer in BWSSB, was arrested on March 2. Later, the Lokayukta police recovered RS 1.62 cr from Prashanth’s private office and also Rs 6.10 cr from MLA Madal Virupakshappa’s house.
After Prashanth’s arrest, MLA Virupakshappa had gone underground. He obtained anticipatory bail on March 7 and stepped down from his chairman’s post. He had been evading inquiries, ever since he was awarded anticipatory bail.
However, his anticipatory bail was challenged in the High Court, which rejected his anticipatory bail application. It also rejected the bail order given on March 7.
As the court cancelled his bail, the Lokayukta police kept an eye on Virupakshappa’s movements in Channagiri and Bengaluru. As he was on his way to Bengaluru, the Lokayukta police, who were waiting for him at Chokkanahalli toll plaza in Kyathsandra, Tumakuru, intercepted his vehicle and arrested him. He was taken to Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru for a medical check up. MLA Virupakshappa complained of chest pain during the check-up which the doctors denied. He was taken to Lokayukta office for inquiry.
