West Bengal: Chief Minister and TMC candidate Mamata Banerjee is set for a win in the by-election to Bhabanipur Assembly seat.
As the counting of votes are underway, Mamata has maintained a huge lead of over 24,000 votes against her nearest rival Priyanka Tibrewal of BJP. Srijib Biswas is the CPM candidate, while Congress has not fielded its candidate here.
The counting of votes will be conducted in a total of 21 rounds.
The by-election was held on September 30 and a record 57.09 per cent turnout was reported on the day.
The by-election was necessitated as Mamata lost the general election from high profile Nandigram constituency against her one time party colleague and BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari.
Following her defeat, Agriculture Minister Sobandheb Chattopadhyay who was elected from Bhabanipur vacated the seat to enable Mamata contest the poll.
In the general elections, TMC returned to power with a bang winning 213 seats against 294, while BJP finished distant second with 77 seats.
