Tobacco growers need fair deal, demands former vice- chairman of Tobacco Board

Mysuru: B V Jaware Gowda former Vice- chairman of Tobacco Board demanded a fair deal for tobacco growers in the district.
Speaking during a convention of tobacco growers at Periyapatna on November 29, Gowda said ‘ Virgenia variety of tobacco grown by farmers in Mysuru is being exported to 60 countries. However the board has failed to ensure better price for the crop here. The fall in prices is due to the failure of the board to control the companies”.
He demanded the central government to revoke 33 per cent penalty imposed on farmers and also goods and services tax (GST). The board should discuss with the union commerce minister in this regard. The companies should be mandated to buy tobacco by ensuring minimum support price (MSP).
He complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi for deciding not to be a part of RCEP. In future too, the country should not sign any pact with USA regarding agricultural produces.
Mysuru- Kodagu MP Prathap Simha, Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, Arkalgud MLA A T Ramaswamy, former MP C H Vijayashankar, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha President Badagalapura Nagendra also spoke.
A memorandum was submitted to MPs Simha and Prajwal to draw the interest of central government towards the grievances of tobacco growers.
