Mysuru: Water level in the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir in Mandya has crossed 104 ft as Kodagu and surrounding districts are receiving heavy rainfall. While last year in June, water level in KRS had touched 100 ft but this year, this is achieved in the third week of July. Although delayed, it has now brought cheers among the farmers.
Farmers were quite disheartened when the Cauvery catchment areas had not received rain in June. Farmers were demanding to release water to the canal as the crops were withering for want of water. In May 29, water level in KRS had dropped to 79.72 ft. Even on June 24, water level stood at 77.67 ft. As a result, the Cauvery Niravari Nigam had appealed to the people to use Cauvery water only for drinking purpose, on priority.
But with Kodagu, Hassan and some parts of Kerala were receiving good rainfall, the inflow was increased in the reservoir since July 2.
On July 22, inflow to KRS was registered at 7914 cusec but as on July 25, inflow stood at 49,801 cusec. In just six days, the reservoir received 6.722 TMC ft inflow of water.
Even the Kabini reservoir is filling to the brim as Wayanad in Kerala is receiving heavy downpour. Water level at Kabini dam stands at 2281 ft against the maximum level of 2284 ft.
Water level in KRS stood at 2446.35 ft as on July 25 as against the maximum level of 2468.80 ft (124.80ft).
