No camera, action! Mysuru misses Film City yet again

Bengaluru: The much delayed Film City project will remain a mirage again for Mysuru.

The State Government has proposed to develop Film City at the cost of Rs 500 crore in the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa who tabled the budget for the year 2020- 21 announced that the Film City will be developed in association with private parties in Bengaluru.
With this, it’s clear again that the Film City earlier proposed at Himmavu in Nanjsngud taluk in Mysuru will remain a dream. The then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced in 2015 budget to develop the film city at Himmavu and the government had also acquired 116 acres of land for the purpose. However, it remained in the back burner as H D Kumaraswamy who succeeded Siddaramaiah announced to develop the film city in his fiefdom Ramanagar.
Now, it’s clear again that film city will remain a pipe dream for Mysureans.
Mysuru was the earlier choice for the reasons that the place is replete with over 250 exotic locations and the ease of mobility was at its best, due to smooth traffic flow. While in the case of Bengaluru the burgeoning traffic was the biggest hurdle in the easy travel of artistes and the film crew.
Most importantly, the contribution of Mysuru towards the development of filmdom was immense as most of the early studios like Navajyoti in Saraswatipuram and Premier at Jayalakshmipuram were started here and remained functional for decades, till they went defunct.
Incidentally Navajyoti Studios was the favourite shooting spot of late film producer and director D Shankar Singh of Mahatma Pictures the early production house of Kannada filmdom. Shankar Singh’s son S V Rajendra Singh Babu is also a known director.
Babu was also the chairman of Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy when the Film City at Himmavu got a push.
