Mulbagal man who dragged Rahul Gandhi to court over his ‘Modi’ remark

1 min read

Kolar: As the Congress and other Opposition parties are criticizing disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as Wayanad MP and his conviction in a defamation case, P M Raghunath in Mulbagal feels “Victory at last.”

Not many know that it was Raghunath, a BJP leader from Mulbagal, who had decided to take on Rahul Gandhi for his alleged remark on Modi surname.

During the Lok Sabha election campaign in Kolar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was campaigning for Kolar candidate K H Muniyappa on April 13, 2019. While addressing a gathering at Sir M Visvesvaraya stadium, Rahul had allegedly said “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” Raghunath who was then State BJP OBC Morcha general secretary, was at this programme and had videographed the event.

He reportedly contacted his friend and BJP leader Purnesh Modi in Surat and decided to file a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi as he insulted a whole ‘Modi’ community.

He had submitted the video to the Election Commission and to verify its veracity, the Commission had inquired then Kolar Deputy Commissioner, who was also the Kolar Returning Officer.

After filing a case in Surat, Raghunath had been to Surat for a couple of times to record his statement. Now that the court has convicted Rahul Gandhi in the case, Raghunath is reported to have said that “victory at last.”
