Bengaluru: The Congress party has announced the candidature of Jagadish Shettar for the by-election to the Karnataka Legislative Council, on Monday. Apart from Shettar, ministers N S Boseraju and former MLC Thippannappa Kamaknoor have also been named for the council elections. By accommodating Shettar, the Congress wants to send a political message to the BJP that it would stand with those who joined the party, especially to the Lingayat community.
The bypolls for the three MLC seats will be held on June 30. Currently, the Congress has 135 MLAS and the MLC candidates will be elected by members of the Legislative Assembly. Considering the MLAs’ strength in the Assembly, the Congress is expected to win all three candidates.
The three MLC seats fell vacant after Baburao Chinchansur, R Shankar and Laxman Savadi resigned to contest the Assembly elections on May 10. Among the three, Savadi quit BJP and joined Congress and won the election from Athani Assembly constituency. Baburao Chinchansur quit BJP to join Congress and Shankar had unsuccessfully contested independently after the BJP denied him the ticket.
If Shettar, who lost in the Assembly elections, wins the council polls, he will have his term till June 2028, Boseraju till June 2024 and Kamaknoor until June 2026.
