Bengaluru/Kalaburagi: Congress leaders staged a protest against the Centre’s refusal to release rice to implement Anna Bhagya scheme in many districts on Tuesday.

In Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, Transport Minister R Ramalinga Reddy and other leaders staged protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.

The protesters had come armed with plates and spoons and demonstrated against the Central government.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said that in spite of the Central government’s refusal to provide rice, the State government will keep its word as promised during the election. The State government is committed to provide 10 kg of rice to every person in the family.

“In the event of no word from the Centre, the State government is exploring all the options to buy from other states,” he added.

In Kalaburagi, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge led the protest.

“By refusing to release rice to the Karnataka government, the Central government is unleashing hate politics against the people of the State. But the State government will keep its word,” Minister Kharge said. It appears that the Central government does not want to protect the interests of the poor in Karnataka, he said and wondered whether the Union government is really keen on eradicating hunger from Karnataka.

Medical Education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil, former minister Revu Nayak Belamagi and others were present.
