Mandya bandh: Vehicles stay off road, schools and shops shut

Mandya: Mandya wore a deserted look – on Saturday – as several vehicles stayed off the road and business establishments had shut down in response to a bandh call given by various farmers’ organisations against the State government for releasing Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu.
Schools, colleges and cinema houses had shut down in Mandya City and Maddur town. The otherwise busy Mandya roads wore a deserted look as neither autos nor private buses were plying. Vehicles stayed off on even the busy Bengaluru-Mysuru State highway. However, the authorities had made alternative routes.
Members of various organisations took out a bike rally to create awareness on Cauvery issue and asked the people to join in the protest.
Some of the farmers in JC Circle slept on road to condemn both the State and Central governments for releasing Cauvery river water.
Raitha Kalyana Sangha members visited Biligudlu water gauge and urged the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to send team of experts to study the reservoir situation as water level stood at 45 tmc.
Meanwhile, the State cabinet – on Friday -has decided to release 3500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.
On Thursday, the State government suffered a major setback after the Apex Court refused to interfere in Cauvery Water Management Authority’s directive to release 5,000 cusec of Cauvery river water to neighbouring State Tamil Nadu everyday. The KRS reservoir has almost dried up threatening acute drinking water shortage in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mandya.
