Bengaluru: In a major setback to the BJP government in Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Tuesday has stayed the State government’s order on its recent internal reservation that deprived 4 per cent reservation to Muslim community. With just a few days left for the Assembly elections on May 10, the Apex Court stay order may have its repercussions on the elections.
A bench headed by Justice K M Joseph stayed the order.
The State government had cancelled 4 per cent reservation given to Muslim community and shared that among Lingayats, Vokkaliga and among other backward communities.
The State government’s order had created a stir but it had defended its order saying that there was no policy to give reservation based on religion.
The Supreme Court will hold its next hearing on May 9.
