Chikmagaluru: Striking an emotional chord with the people of Chikmagaluru, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra – while campaigning here on Wednesday – said like her grandmother and former prime minister Indira Gandhi, she was also there to fight for her family and party’s self-respect.
Drawing a comparison to her grandmother Indira Gandhi’s disqualification with Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification, she said when her grandmother Indira Gandhi was disqualified from the Parliament, the people of Karnataka voted her back to the Parliament.
“About 45 years ago, her family had faced similar situation. Whenever my grandmother and father (Rajiv Gandhi) visited Chikmagaluru, they were in crisis. Like them, today, I and my family is facing a similar crisis. But when Indiraji visited here in 1978 it was raining and today also it is raining. I consider this as a God’s blessing and a good indicator. This is very emotional to me. For, I am in front of you at the same place and simila situation,” she said as the rain poured Malnad region.
It is history that how former prime minister – after being trounced in Rae Bareilli against Raj Narayan after the Emergency – bounced back by contesting a bypoll from Chikmagaluru Constituency in 1978. Her close aide then Congress leader D B Chandregowda had sacrificed his constituency for her who revived her position and party’s prospects.
She appealed to the people to vote for Congress and show their support to the party and its leader Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier, she visited Sringeri Math and offered prayers at the temple. She also paid a visit to Rambhapurimath in Balehonnur, near Sringeri.
