Intel agencies can tap phones: Retd DGP

Mysooru: Former IPS officer Dr D V Guruprasad on Tuesday said ‘intelligence agencies are authorised to tap cellphones’.

Participating in an interaction organised by The Mysore District Journalists Association, to mark the release of ‘Goodacharyeya Aa Dinagalu’ Kannada version of his English book ‘ Corridors of Intelligence’ Guruprasàd who retired as DGP said ‘according to a recent order from the central government, even the data of cell phones, laptops and computers can be accessed’.

Its with the help of phones again the investigators are able to solve 80% of the cases, he said.

Moreover, it’s common that the private detective agencies also tap phones at the insistence of their clients to keep a tab on their spouses, said Guruprasad who had served as the head of State intelligence wing.

In his advise to the journalists on crime reporting, Guruprasad who had dabbled in the field of journalism before wearing khaki said ‘ the scribes should be careful while reporting news related to protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) Act and Juvenile Justice Act ( JJ Act)’.

The journalists are also duty bound to protect their sources without revealing It, he said.

Guruprasad was also the director of State information department when thespian and actor Dr Rajkumar was kidnapped by forest brigand Veerappan. When Rajkumar was released from captivity, Guruprasad was instumental in arranging the press meet of the actor.
