Form committees to build or manage safety walls around canals to prevent accidents: Mandya DC

Mandya: Taking cognisance of repeated accidents and loss of lives for the apparent lack of safety wall around the Visvesvaraya canal in Mandya district, Deputy Commissioner Kumar has issued orders to form committees to build or manage crash barriers or safety walls abutting the canals and tank bund area in Mandya district.
It may be recalled here that a person had died after his car had plunged into Visvesvaraya canal near Thibbanahalli in Mandya taluk. In another accident, four women died on the spot when a car in which they were travelling overturned and fell into Thuraganur Grant Visvesvaraya sub-canal on the outskirts of Gamanahlli village in Srirangapatna taluk, last week.
Taking note of these incidents, the deputy commissioner observed that lack of safety walls abutting the canal and tank was causing the accidents. Hence, he directed to form panels to build or manage the walls with immediate effect.
In all the taluks, the committees will comprise assistant executive engineers of respective taluks’ PWD engineering sections as secretaries. Besides, it will also have engineers from Panchayat Raj Engineering division, assistant executive engineers from Cauvery Niravari Nigam and also assistant executive engineers from National Highways division.
