Cauvery crisis: State govt to file review petition on CWMA order

2 min read

Bengaluru: The State government is expected to file a review petition before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Supreme Court on Friday, after it has been directed to release 3,000 cusec of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting with retired supreme court judges and former advocate generals of the State to evolve a solution to the Cauvery crisis. On Friday, pro-Kannada outfits had observed Karnataka bandh to protest against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. Various farmers organisations and pro-Kannada organisations have been staging protests, too.

During the meeting at CM’s home-office ‘Krishna’, retired judges gave suggestions to the chief minister to form an expert advisory committee exclusively for the State’s irrigation projects.

Meanwhile, the State government has also decided to file a review petition before the CWMA and Supreme Court, explaining the actual situation in the Cauvery basin.

Earlier, the chief minister told farmers’ representatives who met him amidst the bandh, that the State government is bound to obey the authority orders, lest it may face the dismissal of the government. Also, there are chances of reservoirs being overtaken by the Centre, which, he felt, would aggravate the situation further.

“We understand the farmers’ plight and also believe that water should not be released. But, not obeying the court could lead to contempt of court,” said the chief minister.

“Karnataka needs 70 tmc ft of water for irrigation, 30 tmc ft for drinking purpose and three tmc ft for industries. Together, the State needs 106 tmc ft water. But there is only 50 tmc ft of water, he informed. But there is a deficit rainfall this year and in this backdrop, it is becoming difficult to release water, he said. Yet, the government is looking at various options to explain our stand to the court, he added.
