All eyes on chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa as he takes on five-time World Champion Carlsen

1 min read

Bengaluru: While the whole country is waiting for the historic D-Day on Lunar Mission on August 23, the day is also set for another historic event when the country’s chess prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa will take on World Number One Magnus Carlsen at the International Chess Federation World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. Praggnanandhaa is on his final run to beat the World number two Fabiano Caruana of the United States.

Hailing from a modest background in Chennai, Praggnanandhaa made history when he became the youngest International Master at the age of just 10. His sister Vaishali Rameshbabu is also a chess player.

Now, that he is facing five-time World Champion Carlsen – whom he had beaten twice earlier – again, the whole country is waiting with bated breath. If he wins over GM Carlsen, he will be the first Indian to win the title since 2022 after Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand won his second title.

If Praggnanandhaa wins over Carlsen when the Chandrayaan 3 lands on the moon on August 23, this would be the country’s most cherished day.
