AIISH 58th annual day celebrations tomorrow

Mysuru: The 58th annual day celebrations of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) will be held at Seminar Hall Knowledge Park, AIISH campus on August 9 at 10.30 am.


Dr C N Manjunath, Director and Professor of Cardiology, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Research, Bengaluru will be the chief guest, Shree Harsha, Playback Singer will be guest of honour while Dr M Pushpavathi, Director, AllSH will preside over.


As part of the annual day below listed materials will be released. The materials have been prepared in accordance with the objectives of AIISH, focusing on Human resource development, Clinical services, Research and Public awareness.


1. Communication Attitude Test in Hindi (CAT-H) (Author: Dr. Santhosh M): This manual provides the clinician with a personal and “inside” view of Hindi-speaking children’s mal attitude towards speech. The child’s self-perception of his/her speech-associated negative attitude plays a vital role in differential diagnostic assessment and the determination of the strategy, tactics, and targets of therapy.


2. Listening Training Unit Module for students (Author: Dr Chandni Jain, Contributors: Dr Devi N, Dr PrashanthPrabhu, MsJyothi): The module is developed for undergraduate and graduate students posted in the Listening training unit, Department of Audiology. The module provides basic information on the principles of listening training, strategies for developing listening skills, and different levels of listening skills. This module also briefly overviews the management of special clients like tinnitus, central auditory processing disorders, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders, and hyperacusis. This module guides and provides a practical approach to the students in handling the clients during their clinical postings. The model lesson plans and the concept-based activities are provided in the Annexure. Further, the module also contains therapy videos for practical demonstration of the different listening levels (auditory awareness, identification, comprehension, memory and sequencing, and cognition) incorporating listening skills strategies.


3. Grade Level Assessment Test in Science for Grade VI, VII and VIII (Dr. Prithi Venkatesh, D. Dhivya): The developed Grade level assessment tool in Science for Grade VI, VII and VIII is a systematic attempt which has been made in selection of questions based on the knowledge, comprehension, and application. Moreover, in the Indian context, a meaningful testing procedure like Grade Level Assessment tool in key curricular areas like science for upper primary school learners is essential. This test material will not only serve as an achievement test but also as a diagnostic test for identifying the difficulties. Thereby helping teachers, parents as well as the learners themselves.


4. The Clinical Tutorials on Assessment and Management of Communication Disorders: The Clinical Tutorials on Assessment and Management of Communication Disorders for student clinicians in Speech-Language Pathology is developed as an outcome-driven education video resources. This helps in acquiring the clinical competence of student clinicians. Ten such clinical tutorials which are developed are 3 Dimensional Language Acquisition Test (3DLAT), Receptive-Expressive Emergent Language Scales (REELS), Scales of Early Communication Skills (SECS), Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment (FDA), Early Reading Skills (ERS), Linguistic Profile Test (LPT), Detailed assessment of Speech Sound Disorders, Case history taking, Prolonged Speech Technique, Elemental Treatment Procedures for Speech Sound Disorders.


5. Committee for Compilation and Development of Products from Research (Chairperson: Dr Brajesh Priyadarshi, Dr Shijith Kumar, Dr Prashanth, Dr Antony, Dr Priya, Dr Amulya, Dr Rueben, Dr Gayathri, Dr Vikas, Mr Saravanan, Ms Hemashree, Mr Ravishankar):To identify and develop clinically relevant and marketable products resulting from research projects conducted at the institute, a committee known as the “Committee for Compilation and Development of Products from Research” (CCDPR) was established. The CCDPR committee identified eight projects to develop as products. These projects are the outcome of a research project carried out with grants received from AIISH Research Fund (ARF). Out of eight, four products are developed and being realised on Annual Day. The four products are Balanced Word Lists in Kannada for Adults, Low Frequency Word Lists in Hindi, Low Frequency Word Lists in Kannada, Early Reading Skill Malayalam (ERS- M).


6. Feeding and swallowing pamphlets series (Dr Swapna N, Dr Gayathri, Ms Joana, Kusumam): The World Health Organization observes the first week of August, i.e. 1st to 7th August of every year as “The world breastfeeding week” with the aim of promoting breast feeding practices among all culture and strata of human lives. The Centre for Swallowing Disorders at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, joins this global initiative by developing three pamphlets that are aimed at creating awareness among the young mothers and their families about (1) safe breast feeding practices (in English), (2) signs of feeding problems (in English and Kannada) and another translated pamphlet on (3) the services available at the centre for swallowing disorders for dysphagia (in Malayalam). These pamphlets are prepared with the aim of public education and distribution among the target population in medical health care facilities.


Dr Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director, CFTRI will be the chief guest for the cultural programme scheduled at 6 pm. Narendra Narayanan founder and Managing Director, Vinyas Innovative Technologies will be guest of honour while Dr M Pushpavathi, Director, AllSH will preside over.
