After successful surgery at Jayadeva, five Ethiopian kids return home

Bengaluru: Five Ethiopian children underwent successful Open Heart Surgery at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bangalore recently.
Out of five, three of them were blue babies and two were suffering from large hole in the heart with Severe Pulmonary Hypertension.
For several years, children from East African Nation were waiting for the arrival of Foreign Surgical Team in Addis Ababa which has some centers with facility to do Open Heart Surgery.
According to the parents, there are no Paediatric Cardiac Surgeons to perform Complex Congenital Heart Surgeries at Ethiopia. While these complex heart surgeries are routinely performed at Jayadeva Hospital, according to Dr P K Sunil, who performed the surgeries.
Yeabsra Sewnet aged 14 years from Dessie, Maryem Shafi aged 12 years from Enemor Ener and Emanda Entesaseb aged 8 years from Addis Ababa were suffering from Tetrology of Fallot. Aminadab Alemu aged 6 years from Legetafo and Ayub Abdureb aged 16 years from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia had large holes in their heart.
According to Jayadeva Director Dr K S Ravindranath “Out of every 1,000 babies born, 8-10 will have complex congenital diseases more commonly in the form of Tetralogy of Fallot, Heart Holes or narrowing of the valves. The usual symptoms of heart holes are fever, recurrent cough, common cold, pneumonia, growth retardation and bluish discolouration of skin and nails and poor weight gain.
These children are natives of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and belong to financially weaker families.
Rotary International Ethiopia contacted Bangalore Rotary International District 3190 and Needy Heart Foundation’s Rotarian Rajendra Rai and other Rotarians through Ethiopian Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Airlines and The Children’s Heart Fund of Ethiopia to arrange for surgery at Jayadeva Hospital, Bangalore. In turn they contacted Jayadeva Hospital and mailed all the medical reports of the children for further advice and treatment, said Dr Ravindranath.
“The Paediatric Cardiac Surgeons at our Institute studied the cases and decided to call them for surgery in the month of January 2024 and accordingly they were admitted on January 31, 2024. The procedures were conducted at a subsidised cost. Rotary Midtown Bangalore through Rotary Needy Heart Foundation partially sponsored the funds towards surgeries and rest was borne from the Institute,” said Dr Ravindranath.
The team of doctors headed by Dr P K Sunil, Dr Divya and Dr Rashmi along with other doctors and staff successfully conducted the heart surgeries.
All these children made a smooth recovery and after 25 days of their stay at the hospital, they flew back to Ethiopia on Tuesday.
Ethiopian Rotary members are very much thankful to all the facilities, hospitality and quality treatment provided at an affordable cost.
The parents of these children whole heartedly thanked the Karnataka Government and the Director of Jayadeva Dr K S Ravindranath for the surgery.
