Actor is supreme than director, says Swiss theatre director Otto Huber

Mysuru: “Director is the captain of the ship” is the most cliched phrase we have been hearing of whenever we speak about films and theatre.

In a reversal, Otto Huber a theatre director from Switzerland has a different version. According to Huber ‘actor is supreme than director’. Huber was in Gubbi in Tumakuru recently when he had a freewheeling chat with Mysoorunews.com and shared his take on theatre and acting and many facets associated with the stage.

Huber feels that “Particularly in India, the medium of theatre is largely dependent on director. There is no scope for actors, who act according to the instructions of the director. Hence they are known as director’s actor. This tendency has to be changed as actors should evolve as resource persons who should develop their independent skills to exhibit their talent on stage. The director should ensure flexibility for the actor to improvise further”.

Huber has the credit of working with renowned theatre director Peter Brooke in Paris and France.
Adding to Huber’s version Na Srinivas (Papu) a Mysuru based theatre director said “There is a myth that director is superior and actor is a performer. Hence a workshop was conducted to highlight the significance of actors”.
Srinivas the chief of creative academy of theatre science ( CATS) in association with Huber and Gubbi Veeranna Trust had organised a 25- day workshop for actors specially in adolescence education. About 25 actors took part in the workshop.
They also staged a play “The awakening of spring” written by Frank Wedekind a multilingual production titled “Vasanthagamana’ in Kannada, on November 28 and 29 ag Gubbi Veeranna Rangamandira in Gubbi.
Besides, they also performed at about 10 schools and colleges in Gubbi.
Actors Manjunath, Premkumar and Preethi who took part in the workshop were overwhelmed to be a part of the initiative.
