Dasara 2023: All set for Gajapayana tomorrow

Mysuru: The first batch of nine Dasara elephants who will take part in Gajapayana ( journey of Dasara elephants to Mysuru) on September 1 have reached Veeranahosahalli camp in Hunsur taluk on Thursday. They will be sent off to Mysuru in a grand celebration to take part in the World famous Jamboo Savari in Dasara 2023 on Friday.

Fifty-nine-year-old howdah elephant Abhimanyu will lead the batch and he has already reached Veeranahosahalli in Nagarahole forest from Mathigodu elephant camp. Joining him were elephants Bhima and Mahendra. Elephant Mahendra is participating in Dasara for the first time.

The first batch of elephants are: Abhimanyu, Bhima and Mahendra from Mathigodu Elephant Camp, Arjuna from Balle Elepahnt Camp, Dhananjaya and Gopi from Dubare Elephant Camp and Kanjan (instead of previously selected Parthasarathy) and female elephants Vijaya from Dubare Elephant Camp and Varalakshmi from Bhimanakatte Elephant Camp.

They will be sent off to Mysuru amid rituals on September 1 at 9.45 am.

A grand stage has been erected at Veeranahosahalli for the occasion. A cultural programme will also be held to mark the occasion.

Social Welfare Minister and District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa will offer puja and inaugurate the Gajapayana. Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre will release a booklet on Dasara elephants on the occasion.

Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi, Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh, Hunsur MLA G D Harish Gowda, MP Pratap Simha, Mayor Shivakumar, Deputy Mayor Roopa and MLCs A H Vishwanath and C N Manjegowda and others will be present.
