Hubballi: Overwhelmed by comments of senior leaders in BJP, to which he once belonged, former BJP leader Jagadish Shettar sought to know if he committed any crime by quitting BJP and joining the Congress? “I have been a six-time MLA from Hubballi-Dharwad Central constituency. I have grown in politics. But does that mean I should be a slave to the party,” asked the former chief minister.
Addressing mediapesons here on Wednesday, he said the senior BJP leaders did not come with a reason to deny him the ticket. “If they had given me the reason, I would not have quit the party,” he said. “I quit the party as they did not treat me with respect. What wrong did I do for the party? Is it wrong to ask for the ticket? I was not the only one who quit the party. There are many. But, why I am being singled out,” he said. Prominent leaders like Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, JP Nadda and even Yediyurappa is campaigning in such a small constituency. “This is nothing but an attack a poor candidate like me,” he said.
Listing out various leaders who quit the party, Shettar said Laxman Savadi, U B Banakar, N R Santosh and Ayanur Manjunath too have left the party and joined other parties. But the BJP is projecting his resignation as if a major crime, he said and added that campaigning against him has become a movement now.
