2 min read

Mysuru: Migratory birds mainly Mongolian Bar Headed Goose have already started landing at the lakes in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts.

The birds are sighted in Hangala lake in Gundlupet taluk and Kaggalipura lake in Bannur, Mysuru district.

These birds usually travel from central Asia to Mysuru region, but the conservation of habitats remains a demand.

Karnataka is one among the best natural habitat for wild animals and birds. Since princely rule,  importance is given to the development of bird sanctuaries and forests.

Mysuru region is the destination for migratory birds particularly Mongolian Bar-Headed- Goose (answer Indicus). It travels around 1,500 km per day to reach Mysuru and nearby wetlands like Kabini Backwaters and Hadinaru lake, Bannur lake and KRS backwaters and Magadi lake in Gadag.

These migratory birds are so special and  it is also listed among endangered species red list. The conservation and safety of these birds is very important to balance the environmental parameters.

Recently these Bar-Headed-Goose entered Gundlupet water bodies, as these migratory birds search for safe and fresh water and sufficient food like paddy and small millets, but they haven’t tasted the fish yet.

Wildlife photographer and reptile rescuer Shivakumar told Mysoorunews.com “it’s a very wonderful journey and life lesson. These migratory birds are perfectly conveying us about environment protection, but its population is decreasing due to various pollutions and human intervention in water bodies. A special seasonal care is much needed for its safe landing and stay. If we ignore conservation of our water bodies, we also lose these beautiful birds. It’s a wakeup call to take up scientific study of migratory birds to understand the climate crisis, Shivakumar added.

Farmers can help these birds in its undisturbed movement by creating a sustainable environment, avoiding fishing nets in fresh water and by not harvesting all the paddy in the fields.
