How was the mood when India won her independence exactly 75 years ago, especially in Mysuru?
It was truly a vibrant celebration in then princely State of Mysuru where hundreds of freedom fighters were a part of the movement. A whopping 16,926 national flags irrespective of fabric adorned the city then kindling the spirit of nationalism.
It included 1122 silk flags, 5,804 khadi flags and 10,000 paper flags all sold by Khaddar Cooperative Society at Lansdowne Bazaar.
The flags were manufactured at B Krishnappa’s Art and Fabric, Mysuru.
A grand celebration was organised at Subbarayanakere (now popular as freedom fighters memorial park) on Narayan Shastri road, involving all the leading freedom fighters.
Mysuru Heritage Conservation Committee member Echanur Kumar recalled “exactly 75 years ago Mysuru celebrated her first Independence day with thousands of flags setting the mood of the day”.
With the country celebrating the platinum jubilee of its Independence, it assumes significance to go down memory lane to recall how the spirit of patriotism resonated in every nook and corner of the princely State.
