Mysuru girl assisted styling Ram Charan for Golden Globes

4 min read

Mysuru: Even a week or so after ‘RRR’ movie won the Golden Globes Award for the Best Original score for ‘Naatu Naatu’, the movie and its stars are still talked about. Not just that movie, ‘RRR’ movie’s star Ram Charan made headlines for being judged among the Best Dressed Men at the ceremony.

Ram Charan who always puts up his impeccable best, was dressed in an all black ensemble by Tarun Tahiliani styled by celebrity stylist Nikita Jaisinghani. While his classic and regal fashion sense made the whole world talk about, there was a Mysuru connection to this whole celebration.

Prerana Srikantappa, a Mysurean residing in LA assisted stylist Nikita Jaisinghani in styling Ram Charan that eventually scripted history.

In an email interview with Mysoorunews.com, Prerana shared her journey with us.

Excerpts from the interview:

How did you get to work with Nikita? People back home may like to read about all the hard work that you’ve put in.

While studying my masters in fashion merchandising, I worked as a stylist, and in celebrity public relations for a while. After working with Deepika Padukone, a lot of doors opened for me. You connect with amazing stylists and it is really this one big network. One day, I was styling a talent and a very good friend of mine for a Dolce & Gabbana shoot and he saw my work and referred me to Nikita. Working with her was so easy and fun. I’m very grateful for that opportunity.

Could you tell us in detail from choosing the outfit for Ram Charan to the efforts behind the scenes?

‘RRR’ being nominated for the Golden Globes was a huge moment for us. We wanted to represent our culture and our country in the best way possible and that was through our traditional attire. We had custom outfits from numerous great Indian designers being flown in from India to Los Angeles. In the end, Tarun Tahiliani’s design was simple, sophisticated and a classic. It was perfect for the event and perfect on Ram Charan.

Do you have a say while you assist the celebrity stylist?

I’d say, yes. Assistant stylists do have a lot of responsibilities behind the scenes. They source the looks, communicate with all the PR agencies and the brands. While sourcing, you have to have a knowledge of what’s trending and what’s not. An eye for detail and visual composition is important as well. More than anything, it is teamwork.

How was your interaction with Ram Charan? Did you both share anything interesting that’s related to Bengaluru or Mysuru?

Ram Charan is an amazing actor and an even better person. The ‘RRR’ movie press tour was an experience I will never forget. Winning the Golden Globe was a historic moment and I’m glad to be a part of it. He also has an effortless style that not many can pull off. Ram Charan did know a little bit of Kannada and he shared that he visits Bangalore often as he has a residence there.

How was your experience working with Deepika Padukone?

I had a great time working with Deepika Padukone. After being chosen as the jury member for Cannes Film Festival and the brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, Deepika’s fashion game had to be on point. While it was a very demanding role, looking back, I can say that I learnt a lot from it. It was also my first big project that I had ever worked on, so it will always be special to me.

What aspects do you have to keep in mind since you work with different brands or celebrities?

Each brand or client has a different target market and different goal that they want to achieve. Doing your research, having media awareness, and being able to conceptualize creatives on different perspectives and styles is essential. When you are working as a stylist or in public relations, you are constantly on your toes and each day is different.

Have you had any work experience back in India?

Back home, my educational background was in a completely different industry. I majored in computer science and later worked in real estate and marketing for quite some time. I am fortunate to work with amazing Asian talents right now, however, I would love to get back and gain more experience in India.

Tell us about your roots in Mysuru… your school and college days

I grew up in Mysuru for most part of my life. It is a beautiful city and there is so much history attached to it which makes it so unique. I remember, my favorite place was the Chamundi Hills and we’d hang out there quite often after school just to enjoy the view. It is like no other. I, later, graduated as a software engineer and right in the middle of the pandemic, pivoted towards fashion and moved to Los Angeles. My family is still based here and I always make time to visit. Mysuru is home to me.

Who is your fashion inspiration?

My fashion inspiration comes from various sources. Rekha will forever be my muse. She is iconic and true to her style. Apart from her, I love Zendaya, Kendall Jenner and Priyanka Chopra. They are all gorgeous women who are taking over the fashion industry at the moment.

Your future Plans ?

I hope I can continue to do what I’m doing and elevate that to the best of my ability. I have been extremely fortunate to get to where I am and I hope that I get more opportunities and exciting projects coming my way. Fashion has always been my passion and I’m just glad I get to live my dream everyday.
