Yoga teacher R Sharath Jois of Mysuru dies in USA

Mysuru: R Sharath Jois, revered Ashtanga yoga teacher and the grandson of renowned Yoga Guru late K Pattabhi Jois passed away in Virginia, USA, at the age of 53 due to cardiac arrest.

A true torchbearer of the Ashtanga tradition, Sharath Jois had dedicated his life to the practice and teaching of yoga.

Born on September 29, 1971, in Mysuru to Saraswathi (daughter of Pattabhi Jois) and Rangaswamy couple, he was surrounded by yoga from an early age.

By seven, he had already begun practicing his first asanas, and as he grew, he explored the intricacies of the primary and intermediate series under the guidance of his grandfather.

Though he pursued a diploma in electronics at JSS College in Mysuru, he always felt his calling was the Ashtanga Yoga.

At 19, Sharath started his formal yoga journey in earnest, rising daily at 3.30 am to study and assist his grandfather at the Lakshmipuram Yoga School and later in Gokulam.

This disciplined routine was the foundation of his lifelong devotion to yoga, and his dedication only deepened with time. Known for his unwavering commitment, he would rise six days a week at 1 am to complete his own practice before teaching others at the Sharath Yoga Centre, he founded in Hebbal Industria Area, Mysuru.

Sharath’s influence reached far beyond India; he was a globally respected figure who taught and inspired many around the world, including celebrities such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sting.

He carried the Ashtanga lineage with humility, dedication, and a gentle spirit that touched the lives of countless students.

He is survived by his wife Shruthi and his daughter Shraddha and son Sambhav.
