MP Tejasvi Surya draws criticism for opening IndiGo aircraft’s emergency exit door

1 min read

Bengaluru: Nearly a month after it happened, Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP from Bengaluru South, has been identified as the passenger on the Chennai-Tiruchirapalli passenger IndiGo flight who allegedly opened the emergency exit door that could have put the lives of other passengers at risk.

Although he had written an apology, the matter was not out in the public. It is reported that Surya was travelling to Chennai along with Tamil Nadu State BJP Chief K Annamalai. He allegedly pulled the lever leading to the opening of the emergency exit. Passengers were disembarked and thorough checks were done by the engineers to ensure safety of the passengers. This delayed the plane for two hours.

Reports suggested that the DGCA and IndiGo had confirmed the incident but had refused to identify the passenger.
However, it has come to light after former IAS officer Sasikanth Senthil tweeted on Tuesday that “What happened on board flight 6E7339 on 10th December 2022 @IndiGo6E?? It takes only one call from @MoCA_GoI to silence things??? We could have lost 70 lives.” Surya is reported to have written an apology letter and was allotted a different seat.

Surya’s alleged act has drawn criticism from aviation experts who sought to know why he was let out without any action, for people who opened emergency exits in the past were booked for such acts.
