Bengaluru: Eleven years after Sowjanya (17), a second PU student of SDM College in Ujire in Dakshina Kannada was allegedly raped and murdered, the CBI Special Court – on Friday – acquitted the main accused Santhosh Rao owing to lack of evidence against him.

Sowjanya’s case had caught the attention of the whole state as her parents had allegedly blamed Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade’s family members in the rape and murder of their daughter.

Sowjanya, then a II PU student had gone missing while returning home from college in Ujire in October 2012. Her body was found in severely ‘violated’ condition at Mannasanka, near Dharmasthala sending shockwaves among the people.

Sowjanya’s father Chandappa Gowda had filed a complaint in Belthangady police station. The case witnessed severe protest through Belthangady demanding punishment to the perpetrators.

Sowjanya’s family had accused Nishchal Jain, Uday Jain, Mallik Jain and Arshith Jain as the accused. After the intense protests by the people alleging shoddy investigation, the case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department that gave a clean chit to all the four above mentioned and only charged Santhosh Rao, who is reportedly mentally unstable, as the main accused.

But, the then State government headed by Siddaramaiah succumbed to the people’s pressure and transferred the case to the CBI in 2013. The CBI in its chargesheet had named Santhosh Rao as the main accused.

Yet, after 11 years of trials, the CBI court on Friday acquitted accused Santhosh Rao citing lack of evidence to prove Santhosh committed the crime.
