What’s social distance! Booze lovers throw norms into wind at CM’s native

1 min read

Mandya: As soon as the liquor vends opened doors on Monday, boozers thronged liiquor shops in large numbers here on Monday. Similar was the scene at Bookankere the native of Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in K R Pet taluk here. All the liquor outlets had shut doors for over a month as a precautionary measure against Covid-19.

What made the highlight was the norm of social distancing that was thrown to the wind by the people who were too eager to down one peg too many. The wine store located on the outskirts of K R Pet town witnessed the rush with the drunkards jostling for space even as the bamboo poles had been installed to enable people to wait in queue.

Moreover, the cause of concern here is the spurt in the number of Covid-19 cases in the district especially after a family of four from Mumbai who came along with the mortal remains of their family member to perform last rites in their native in  Pandavapura taluk tested positive for the virus recently.

According to an estimate, there are not less than 15,000 people from Mandya alone who have made Mumbai their second home, where they have found a job to eke out a living. Almost all of them have returned home after the virus spread its tentacles in Maharashtra which  has recorded the highest of 12,000 cases and over 500 deaths.
