Water Sports in KRS backwaters: DC lists various plans for Mandya tourism development

Mandya: The district is ideal for tourism and there are several spots that attract eco-tourists and steps have been taken to develop them, said Deputy Commissioner Dr Kumara.

He was speaking while presiding over the District Tourism Expert Committee meeting organised by the Tourism Department at the Deputy Commissioner’s office hall.

He said that, two meetings of tourism enthusiasts and experts have already been organised regarding the development of tourism in the district.

Tourism enthusiasts and experts have identified tourism destinations that need to be developed in the district and have given many suggestions. A proposal will be submitted to the government depending on the availability of the grants.

A separate website providing information about tourism in the district has been developed and will be operational in a few days. Steps have been taken to attract more tourists by promoting it through hoardings. A brochure on tourism in Mandya district has been released. Water sports will be established in the backwaters of Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam, he said.

Jayaprakash, president of Karnataka Sangha, urged that, the inscriptions in the district should be preserved in a suitable place in the city. Basaralu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple and  the temples of the Hoysala period should be conserved, and a theme park should be established in Mandya. The steps should be taken to convert the houses of renowned Kannada poet K S Narasimhaswamy and freedom fighter Mariyappa into museums.

Prof N S Rangaraju, retired professor of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, University of Mysore, said that there are tourist destinations in the district, that attract foreigners and this will provide an opportunity for the locals to become economically empowered.

There are 25 French tombs in Harohalli near Pandavapura and these should be developed. There are also British tombs of Tipu Sultan’s era and if they are developed and promoted more, they can attract foreign tourists.

Bhuvarahanatana sculpture is the first sculpture in the country. Rock climbing should be introduced at Kunti Betta and water sports at Hosaholalu, Govindana Hara, Kikkeri and Gavihala. There are 25 to 30 temples of Hoysala period in the district and they should be developed.

Alemane in Karighatta and Thonnuru should be added to the tourism list, he told the meeting.

Dr Mahadev, retired professor of Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, spoke and said that each tourist spot in the district has its own importance.

He told the meeting that, the three-round fort should be preserved. The ashes of the dead is being immersed in Cauvery River, which is being used for irrigation and drinking water purposes. An alternative place should be provided for it. A park should be constructed at Paschimavahini and in the western part, and that water sports should be established near Thonnur.

DC Dr Kumara said, the steps will be taken to preserve the inscriptions in the district, while the work is in progress to convert the house of Kannada poet K S Narasimhaswamy into a museum.

The proposed site inspections will be carried out to establish water sports facilities behind Sri Venugopalaswamy temple and in Thonnur. The temples of Hoysala period will be discussed with the relevant departments and if they are not on the tourism list, steps will be taken to add them in tourism list and develop the temples. A committee has been formed to look into the alternative measures to be taken to prevent immersing ashes in Cauvery River. The committee has submitted a report and the report will be submitted to the government, he said.

DC Kumara said that, tourism projects will be formulated to attract domestic and foreign tourists by establishing a folk museum and developing tourism places in the district in a phased manner.

Heritage Conservation Committee: He said that an expert committee will be formed to protect the heritage sites in the district and develop the ancient temples in the district.

Haravu Deve Gowda, Sathyabhama, Sannaswamy Gowda and Raghavendra, Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, were present in the meeting.
