Water for Vaddagere: Farmers launch overnight protest

Chamarajanagar: Thousands of farmers have launched an overnight protest on Monday demanding the release of water from Huttur lake to Vaddagere lake in Gundlupet taluk in the district.

The farmers who have been staging a sit-in near the pump house at Huttur lake in Terakanambi Hobli in Gundlupet taluk have been demanding the authorities to facilitate the flow of water from Huttur.

The farmers led by Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association president Kurbur Shanthakumar laid siege to the pumphouse.

The officials who spoke to Mysoorunews,  are expressing their helplessness. According to the detailed project report ( DPR), water will be flown from Huttur to four lakes in the surrounding. The work on laying of pipeline from Huttur to Vaddagere is completed, but the similar work to connect other lakes at Suvarna Nagar and Arakalvadi in Chamarajanagar taluk are yet to be completed. If the water is released to Vaddagere, there are dangers of excess water going waste after reaching Vaddagere’.

However the demands of the farmers too cannot be ignored, as they are demanding water for irritating their lands. Farmer leaders Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj, Honnur Prakash and Guruprasad are also taking part in the overnight protest.

As a precautionary measure police are deployed at the spot.
