VP Venkaiah Naidu hails late Maharaja Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar as multifaceted personality

Mysuru: Vice- president of India M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday described 25th and last Maharaja of Princely Mysore (Mysuru) state Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar as a multifaceted personality who has left behind an indelible mark in various fields.

The Vice- president took part in the closing ceremony of year long birth centenary celebration of erstwhile Maharaja of Mysuru Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar, virtually from New Delhi, organised by His Highness Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Foundation.

The Vice- president mentioned about the contributions of the erstwhile king in giving impetus to the industrial sector.

Wadiyar laid foundation for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited ( formerly Hindustan Aeronautics), encouraged science and technology with the promotion of scientific temper and gave fillip to the development of India Institute of Science ( IISc) in Bengaluru”.

The Wadiayar had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and he was not just a student of Sanskrit, but had also acquired scholarly traits in the realm. The Wadiyar was much in demand for his oratorical skills and was also a writer which earned him a title “Dakshina Bhoja”.

The Vice- president made a mention of the remarkable step taken by Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar, who signed the instrument of accession by merging the princely state with the dominion of India in 1947. It showed that the maharaja then had firm faith in the nuances of democracy.

To highlight, Mysore was the first state to accept the instrument of accession.

Whenever there is a mention of Mysuru, the pride comes with the richness associated with the place in the fields of art, heritage  culture, tradition and for many more and the credit goes to the rulers of Mysuru, said Vice- president.

The Vice- president began his address in Kannada, before switching over to English, where he delved into the achievements of Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar.
