Vizag gas leak will have long term impact on health: Prof Rangappa

1 min read

Mysuru: The Vizag gas leakage that has left 11 dead and scores hospitalised would have a drastic impact on the health of those who inhaled it, observed, Prof K S Rangappa, former Vice- chancellor, University of Mysore, a renowned scientist.

Prof Rangappa was of the opinion that the styrene gas is used in the production of polystyrene plastic, fibreglass, rubber and latex. However, the production involves deadly chemical reaction.

“Prima facie it clearly appears that there was a technical fault in the factory. The poisonous gas has mixed with air triggering the tragedy. People who are exposed to the poisonous air even far from the factory will be affected. People are collapsing in the road unconscious as it primarily affects the respiratory system. Besides, it harms the nervous system in the long term,” he observed.

Although, Corona also affects the respiratory system, there is a difference between both these tragedies, he said.

Thankfully, the tragedy is not that severe when compared to the Bhopal tragedy, he added.
