Mysuru: With the battle lines drawn, Varuna Assembly Constituency in Mysuru district has turned out to be keenly watched out for, ahead of the elections on May 10.

Till BJP announced its first list of 189 candidates on Tuesday night, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who was looking for the third win from Varuna was confident of easy score.

Following the announcement of candidates, Varuna has garnered all attention suddenly with BJP fielding influential Lingayat leader and Housing Minister V Somanna to pose a tough fight against Siddaramaiah.

Somanna who came to Mysuru on Thursday, first after his candidature was announced, went on a visiting and meeting spree.

Most importantly, like every leaders, irrespective of party who call on Suttur seer Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji, Somanna also met the seer and sought the blessings.

He also sought divine intervention at the temple of Goddess Chamundeshwari at Chamundi Hill.

Somanna also met Chamarajanagar BJP MP V Sreenivas Prasad at the latter’s house at Jayalakshmipuram in the city.

Varuna has a mix of voters, from Lingayats to Vokkaliga Gowda, Kuruba to Uppara, Dalits to Nayakas among others.

Dalit votes, that usually form the vote bank of Congress is crucial and hence Somanna meeting Sreenivas Prasad an influential Dalit leader assumes significance in getting the community votes.

Sreenivas Prasad is also an arch rival of Siddaramaiah, that proved costly for the former chief minister, who suffered a humiliating defeat in Chamundeshwari constituency in 2018 elections.

Addressing media persons at the BJP city office Sachin Rajendra Bhavan, Chamarajapuram, Somanna said “The national leaders arrived at the decision of fielding me in Varuna and Chamarajanagar constituencies, only after weighing all pros and cons. I have the responsibility of shouldering the task assigned by the national leaders. I have 40 years of political experience and hence the leaders have given me an opportunity to prove my might.”

Somanna who promised to develop Varuna and Chamarajanagar on the lines of Bengaluru, sought votes in the name of development works.

BJP is the fine example for having a strong foundation. After filing nomination papers, I will go to the people and organise meetings from the booth level, said Somanna.

Mysuru- Kodagu MP Prathap Simha, BJP Mysuru Rural President Mangala Somashekar, BJP Varuna leader Sharath Puttabuddhi, former ZP President Ka Pu Siddaveerappa and others were present.
