Uttarakhand CM calls emergency meeting as houses, roads develop cracks

Dehradun: In the wake of shocking reports of “sinking” Joshimath in Uttarakhand after an aquifer breached, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held an emergency meeting on Friday to immediately evacuate residents from the area.

The State government has sought help from the Army and has asked the officials concerned to ensure availability of helicopters to airlift the distressed residents in case of emergency.

The move comes after reports of “Sinking” Joshimath splashed everywhere. Houses, buildings and have developed cracks forcing people to stay outside.

The Joshimath town is one of the places of religious and cultural importance in the State. For the past two days, residents in the area have been living in fear after an aquifer breached and houses developed severe cracks. People have rushed out of their homes and have since been staying outside braving the harsh winter.

He has instructed the officials concerned to immediately evacuate 600 families whose houses developed cracks and are at a higher risk. Several relief camps have been set up to accommodate evacuated people. The government is also contemplating for the permanent rehabilitation of Joshimath residents.

The government has been accused of not taking any action against illegal encroachments in the area which they feel is the reason behind the impending disaster.
