Tusker chases and kills forest staff assigned to drive away elephants in Madikeri

Madikeri: While the tragic news of forest official ‘Sharpshooter’ Venkatesh’s death is still green in the minds of people, yet another staff from elephant task force died after a tusker attacked him at Madikeri on Monday. The victim, Girish, 35, was engaged in elephant operation at Kedakal when the tusker chased him and attacked him. A grievously injured Girish was rushed to Madikeri government hospital but he breathed his last. Girish was working at Anekadu Rapid Response Team.
Taking to the social media, Joseph Hoover, a wildlife enthusiast, wrote, “Even as we grieve over the death of sharp shooter Venkatesh who was trampled by a tusker in Hassan last week, a forest watcher was killed in an elephant attack in Madikeri, Kodagu district, Karnataka.
“Girish was part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT) which had been assigned to drive away elephants from a coffee estate. Of late, there have been far too many man-animal conflicts in Karnataka…”
Three days ago, H H Venkatesh, who was hired by the forest department to tranquilise the pachyderm was killed by the animal at Halliyur village in Alur taluk of Hassan.
