Uttara Kannada: Tulasi Gowda, affectionately known as the ‘Tree Mother’, passed away on Monday, at the age of 80. She breathed her last at her house in Honnalli village, Ankola taluk, reportedly due to age-related health issues.

A revered environmentalist, Tulasi Gowda gained widespread recognition for planting over a lakh trees, establishing herself as a prominent figure in environmental conservation in Uttara Kannada district. Her work carried forward the legacy of Padma Shri Sukri Bommu Gowda, another esteemed woman achiever from the region.

Tulasi Gowda devoted her life to nurturing the environment, beginning her journey at the Mattighatta Forest Nursery, where she worked until her retirement. To sustain herself, she collected and sold firewood.

A proud member of the Halakki Vokkaliga community, she was also a respected folk artist, deeply committed to educating and training younger generations in environmental conservation.

Her extraordinary contributions earned her the Padma Shri Award, one of India’s highest civilian honors, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad.

She was also the recipient of numerous accolades, celebrating her lifelong dedication to protecting and preserving nature.
