New Delhi: JDS Karnataka Youth President Nikhil Kumaraswamy stated that, following an appeal to the Central Government on behalf of tobacco farmers from the Mysuru region, the tobacco procurement process has now begun.
Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, Nikhil explained “A request was submitted to Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. Former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy was also part of our delegation and helped convey the farmers’ issues to the minister. As a result, this move will benefit farmers,” he said.
Farmers from regions like Hunsur, H D Kote, Periyapatna and K.R. Nagar in Mysuru district cultivate tobacco. However, they have been distressed due to the steep fall in prices.
“We highlighted the need for central intervention to support the farmers,” Nikhil added.
“I have been in Delhi for the past week, actively working on this matter. Tobacco farmers are not receiving fair prices, and the recent adverse weather conditions have affected crop quality. While companies are offering good rates for premium-grade tobacco, the situation is dire for the rest. Hence, I met Union Minister Piyush Goyal to urge him to assist the farmers,” he said.
“Tobacco harvesting in countries like Brazil and other Latin American nations is expected to commence around January. Our farmers’ tobacco must be sold before December to avoid competition. Minister Piyush Goyal and senior officials from the Commerce Department have responded positively to our request,” Nikhil concluded.
