TN CM urges Centre to intervene and direct Karnataka govt to release Cauvery water

1 min read

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has sought Centre’s intervention to direct the Karnataka government to release the State’s share of Cauvery water as it is crucial for the standing Kuruvai crops.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written a letter to Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in this regard. In the letter, Stalin has appealed to the Union Minister to direct the Cauvery Water Management Authority to ask the Karnataka government to abide by the Supreme Court order on release of Cauvery water in 2018.

The letter further states that the Kuruvai crops grown in Cauvery delta region depend on water from Mettur reservoir. Since there has been a decline in Southwest Monsoon, the standing crops depend on water from Karnataka.

It may be recalled here that the Karnataka government had recently stated that it would not be able to release Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water as there was water deficit in the State.

Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswami, recently pointed out that the State is facing a water crisis. “When there is no water even for drinking in the State, how is it possible to release water to TN,” he had asked. However, he added that a meeting would be convened soon to discuss the issue.
