Mysuru: Amidst the raging debate over the revision of textbooks undertaken by Rohit Chakratheertha led Textbooks Revision Committee in the State, writer S L Bhyrappa pointed out to teach truth related to history to children.

Bhyrappa who addressed media persons at his house in the city on Thursday recalled his experience in the textbook revision committee during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“When the then NCERT committee had included my name on the panel, I asked about Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and his atrocity, and 15 days later I was dropped from the committee. Instead, they named a communist to the committee. It was then I started to refer the books and wrote Avarana novel. I had listed 134 books to explain about how the Hindu Temples were razed and Hindus were converted”, said Bhyrappa.

In Maharashtra, the facts related to the place of guerilla war between Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan were concealed. Afzal Khan was portrayed as a hero and there were no references to as to why Afzal khan came to Mahabaleshwarghad and tried to kill Shivaji and all these facts were suppressed. The board was also removed and a dargah stands there now, said Bhyrappa.

“I just want to say not to infringe upon your ideologies, but must tell the truth about history. Here in Karnataka Tipu Sultan is glorified, but if one raises questions about Tipu’s atrocities in Kodagu and Malabar, such people will be portrayed as communal”, said Bhyrappa.

Referring to Mysuru- Kodagu MP Prathap Simha’s demand to change the name of Tipu Express to Wadiyars the Maharajas of Mysore, Bhyrappa said “there was a hue and cry. They don’t even want Abdul Kalam’s name for the train”.

Bhyrappa also condemned the alleged bid made by NSUI activists to lay siege to the house of Primary and Secondary Education minister B C Nagesh at Tiptur in Tumakuru district on Wednesday.

Bhyrappa who however refused to react succinctly on the section of writers gradually withdrawing permission for their poems included in school textbooks, said “Currently I am reading the book- My Frozen Turbulence in Kashmir.

Writer Pradhan Gurudutt and others were present.
