Mysuru: As a part of ongoing Swachhata Pakhwada, South Western Railway, Mysuru division conducted an anti-plastic campaign at Mysuru station on Thursday.

On arrival of a special express train from Bengaluru at Platform 1, members of South Western Railway Women Welfare Organisation (SWRWWO) along with Aparna Garg, Divisional Railway Manager & President SWRWWO Mysuru unit distributed cloth bags to the passengers. The bags were contributed by the members of SWRWWO, who counselled and urged the passengers to shun plastic bags.

Aparna Garg, DRM, SWR, Mysuru division helps a passenger to shift articles from plastic bag to cloth bag.

Members of SWRWWO helped the passengers who were carrying plastic bags to transfer the articles to the cloth bag. Passengers who were pleasantly surprised at the gesture of these members were equally receptive.

Two staff dressed as Yakshagana artistes also created awareness about the significance of wearing mask in public places and the need for maintaining social distance throughout the day to stay away from Covid-19.

This event was organised to educate travelling public about the ill effects of plastic garbage to nature and to be a part of Railways effort to reduce the same, specifically single use plastic.

Due to sustained efforts of the Railway staff and effective drives, there is a substantial reduction in the generation of plastic waste at the stations.

All the stations of Mysuru division have already been provided with twin dustbins for segregation of waste at source and proper disposal of same is ensured.

Mysuru station has four plastic bottle crushing machines and similar machines are provided at other 10 major stations over the division to ensure safe disposal of used plastic water bottles.

The division has been setting an example in keeping railway premises spic and span by organising frequent drives and inculcating the importance of cleanliness among the staff and passengers, according to Priya Shetty, Divisional Commercial Manager and senior PRO.
