Suspected ‘sandalwood smuggler’ killed as forest men open fire in self-defence

Tumakuru: A suspected sandalwood smuggler was killed, while three others made good their escape when the forest personnel opened fire in self-defence at Kamplapura Sandalwood forest in Huliyurdurga in the district on Saturday.
The deceased is yet to be identified, with no trace about his details.
Acting on a tip off about a gang of four cutting sandalwood trees and piecing out the logs, Huliyurdurga forest personnel rushed to the forest. However, the accused retaliated and attacked forest personnel with machete and stones. The forest personnel opened fire in self- defence and a bullet hit a smuggler by accident and died on the spot.
Deputy Commissioner Patil, RFO Mansoor and other officials visited the spot.
Huliyurdurga police have registered a case.
