New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday has turned down the Tamil Nadu government’s plea to pass an interim order to release 24,000 cusec of Cauvery water, every day. The court has sought a report from the Cauvery Water Management Authority on the quantity of water released by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the Court has been informed that the Authority is meeting on Monday to discuss release of Cauvery water.
The top court further observed that it does not possess any expertise on the issue. And, it will wait for the Authority to submit the report whether the Karnataka government complied with discharge of water or not.
It may be recalled here that the Karnataka government has strongly called the Tamil Nadu’s plea to the Apex Court seeking to release 24,000 cusec of Cauvery Water, daily, as “misconceived”. For, the State has not received good rainfall this year and its plea is based on the wrong assumption. This year, Karnataka has experienced a distressed water year yet the Tamil Nadu government filed an interim plea in the Supreme Court seeking 24,000 cusec of water, observed the Karnataka government.
