Sumangala S Mummigatti, AIR Bengaluru’s Science broadcaster, no more

Bengaluru: All India Radio programme executive and a celebrated name in Science and Environment-based programmes, Sumangala S Mummigatti passed away here on Sunday. She was 59.

Sumangala Mummigatti has strived to make Science, environment and its related topics understandable even to the layman. One of the popular current programmes ‘Nithya Vijnana’ that is aired everyday on Akashvani was also her brainchild. Among other popular programmes, a 52-episode programme on climate change ‘Bhoorameya Bisiyusiru’ that was aired in 2019 was also a big hit among the listeners.

She is the recipient of the Radio Oscar International award for her series of radio programmes on climate change and ecology.

Apart from being a programme producer, she has also authored over 40 books on Science and produced hundreds of Science and environment-based programmes on AIR. Some of her notable books include ‘Vijnana Tantrajnana Darshana’, ‘Adbhuta Avasa Andaman’ and ‘Allama Prabhu’. She is one of the Editors of Navakarnataka Publications’ popular series ‘Vijnana Sarala Parichaya’.
A book titled Introduction to Science and Technology published by her had received critical acclaim. She had produced several programmes on space science as she was associated with ISRO. Apart from spreading awareness on Science, she is also credited with grooming budding young Science writers and speakers.

She is survived by a son and husband who also works in AIR, Bengaluru.
