Belagavi: In a major setback to ruling BJP Government, former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi bid adieu to the party and is all set to join Congress.

Savadi who has resigned from all the posts he was holding in BJP as State Vice-president and Core Committee Member, will be the Congress candidate against sitting BJP MLA Mahesh Kumatahalli in the general election on May 10 from Athani.

As BJP candidate Savadi had lost to Congress’ Kumatahalli in 2018 general election. Kumatahalli joined BJP later, and sulking Savadi had to support Kumatahalli in the by-election for Athani constituency.

With Savadi’s decision to join Congress, KPCC President D K Shivakumar and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and AICC General Secretary and Karnataka incharge Randeep Singh Surjewala have dealt a blow to BJP in Mumbai-Karnataka region.

Laxman Savadi the BJP top leader in Belgavai- Karnataka had a hold in nearly half-a-dozen constituencies in Belagavi.

Savadi who had announced his decision to quit BJP with which he was associated for 20 years, met KPCC President D K Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Friday. Shivakumar later drove Savadi in his car to Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah’s residence, where they were joined by Surjewala.

Savadi will be submitting his resignation to MLC post in the evening. According to Savadi, he is joining Congress unconditionally, but the rumours are agog that Savadi has put forth many conditions to be fulfilled, if Congress returns to power in the State.
