Srirangapatna Dasara: Elephant runs amock during practice

Srirangapatna: After a gap of two years, Srirangapatna witnessed tense moments ahead of Dasara, as an elephant ran haywire on Friday.
Hiranya, one of the elephants, ran amock, causing panic among the public and tourists.
Hiranya, a kumki (trained) elephant, along with howdah elephant Mahendra and another kumki elephant, Lakshmi, was brought to Srirangapatna to participate in the Jamboo Savari from Bannimantapa at Kiranguru on Mysuru-Bengaluru highway.
However, during the morning practice session, Hiranya bolted, creating a moment of chaos. The forest personnel team, led by Akram Pasha, successfully brought the situation under control, restraining Hiranya with chains.
The Srirangapatna Dasara procession however passed off peacefully, with Mahendra carrying the wooden howdah with the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari from Bannimantap to the premises of Sriranganathaswamy Temple.
In a similar incident in 2022, the elephant Gopalaswamy was startled by the sound of fireworks. Forest Department employee Akram and veterinarian Dr Ramesh were able to calm the elephant during that situation.
