Mysuru: Sri Lankan cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan is planning to set up a beverage unit in Chamarajanagar. If all goes planned then it would be his second entrepreneurial initiative in Karnataka. For, he is planning to set up aluminium cans and beverages filling unit industry in Dharwad.

In Chamarajanagar, he is planning to set up an industry on 46 acres of land and aims to provide employment opportunity to more than 800 persons.

It is reported that his venture, M/S Muttiah Beverage and Confectionary Private Limited has been allotted land at Badanaguppe, Kellamballi Industrial Area in Chamarajanagar. Badanaguppe Industrial area is spread up to 900 acres and the beverages unit is expected to function from next June or July.

In Dharwad too, he is planning to set up the plant at FMCG Cluster in Mummigatti Industrial Area near Dharwad. He is reportedly investing Rs 439.18 cr into the venture and hopes to provide employment to 500 youths.

However, this has not gone down well with environmentalist and filmmaker Suresh Heblikar who has raised concern about water consumption. Heblikar is of the opinion that the industry will consume at least 20 lakh liters of water everyday and Hubballi-Dharwad cities are already reeling under severe water shortage.

Dharwad district In-charge Minister Santhosh Lad has welcomed the initiative especially in North Karnataka region that will help in employment generation.
