Soaring veggie prices, slushy M G road market
2 min readMysuru: Whenever it rains wreaking a havoc, destructing crops on a large scale, it is obvious that the supplies will be hit.
When it comes to vegetables and leaves, the prices shoot up to the hilt burning holes in the pocket.
With Mysuru in particular and most parts of the Karnataka witnessing torrential rainfall in the recent days, the vegetable prices are slowly going up on the scale.
Beans especially of local variety, known as ‘naati’ beans in local parlance has touched Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg in retail at M G road market behind Dasara Exhibition Grounds in the city. Farmers are also getting some returns with the wholesale price at APMC Mysuru fixed at Rs 55 per kg. It is expected to go up further with weatherman predicting more rainy days ahead.
Tomato the price of which had fallen like a dud, is slowly rising with the vegetable touching Rs 30 to Rs 50 per kg depending on the quality. A box of tomato that holds 22 kg is being sold at not less than Rs 600 at APMC, a gain again for farmers who had cultivated the crop.
A few days ago, it was being sold Rs 7 to Rs 10 per kg and the rainy situation has made the tomato unaffordable, with not many willing to pay more for this juicy vegetable.
Carrot is sold at Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg, followed by ladies finger, raddish and beetroot, brinjal at Rs 30 to name a few.
Mention must be made made of leaves especially of kottambari (coriander) which has touched Rs 40 for a bunch, while most others are sold at Rs 10 apiece.
Many were taken aback, with no mood to haggle with the vendors, who were ready with the answer, pointing at the wholesale rate.
Meanwhile, it’s not just the inconvenience of price that matters during the visit to market, but also the alluvial surface. Any blind move can lead to a skiing like experience, with the slush all over.
Amid this water puddles at the entrance serves a caution to vehicular users, especially two-wheelers.
On the road, with the either sides occupied by ubiquitous hawkers, one should be all eyes and ears, for the danger that lurks in case of even any minute negligence.
