Mysuru: Mysuru Dasara is all about practicing ancient tradition with a touch of modernity and sprinkles of fun.
Core elements of Dasara are the crowd calling celebrations of Yuva Dasara, Aaharamela (Food Festival), illuminations and to end it with the popular jamboo savari on the day of Vijayadashami.
Jamboo Savari stands out with its own uniqueness of caparisoned elephants with 750-kg Golden Howdah with the idol of presiding deity Goddess Chamundeshwari, police bands, dance troops, tableaus from across the state and much more.
One part of this parade is the Mayor considered as first citizen of the city in a gown, riding on horseback while waving at the crowd. It is also a tradition in practice for the past several years.
However, this year the government has restricted the celebration due to the pandemic and this has resulted in huge changes in this year’s celebration.
“We usually start rehearsing 15 days prior to the big day but until now no such preparations have begun. Yes, I was excited to be a part of the Jamboo Savari and to ride on the horseback but people’s safety comes first. I am happy with the government’s decision on simple Dasara”, said Mayor Tasneem.
