Simple Dasara again? Jumbo list to be ready after August 12

2 min read

Mysuru: With less than two months left for 411th Dasara festivities to begin on October 7, the forest personnel have started to train the elephants in the camps.

As the threat over Covid-19 pandemic remains still, with the third wave appearing imminent, it seems to be a simple Dasara like previous year.

Navaratri festivities will unfold on October 7 and folds with Jamboo Savari (Vijsyadashami) on October 15 this year. But the chief minister headed highpower committee that takes a call on Dasara is yet to be convened this year.

It is attributed to the recent political developments with change in chief minister. Though the ministers were sworn-in recently, they are waiting for portfolios and districts to be made incharge of.

Not willing to take the chance, the forest personnel are training the elephants in Rampura camp of Yediyala range in Bandipur forest to acclimatise the pachyderms with nitty-gritty of the annual event.

A couple of elephants are being trained about how to manage the entry and exit amidst crowd, it is said.

Sources told Mysoorunews.com “the list of elephants to be taken for Dasara will be drawn after August 12. While the number of elephants for the year is yet to be decided. Last year only five elephants were listed as the Vijayadashami procession was restricted within Palace precincts.”

Unlike previous years, there is also a change in guard in forest department here, due to recent transfers. However, the matter of relief is DCF couple Kamala Karikalan and Karikalan are back. While Kamala is tasked with wildlife, her husband is for social forestry. The duo have the experience of being a part of Dasara earlier also.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham said “There is no discussion yet on Dasara celebrations at the government level. However, we are ready with proposals from our side.”

Meanwhile veterinarian Dr Nagaraj who has the experience of handing Dasara elephants for 21 years is transferred to his home department- Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services and posted in K R Nagar.

When contacted Dr Nagaraj said “if the district administration wills, I will take up Dasara duty.”
