Bengaluru: At last, the Shivamogga airport is operational from Thursday and the first connecting flight arrived from Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

Former chief minister and veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, minister M B Patil, MLA Beluru Gopalakrishna, MP Raghavendra, MLA Vijayendra and former minister K S Eshwarappa took the maiden flight to Shivamogga from Bengaluru.

Speaking before his flight, former chief minister B S Yediyurappa told mediapersons that the credit for the success of the airport should go to the farmers who gave up their land for the dreams of people of Shivamogga. “The airport is their blessing. As a mark of gratitude for their gesture, we are taking two farmers along with us in the maiden flight,” Yedyiurappa said.

The Shivamogga airport is said to be the biggest after Kempegowda International airport in Bengaluru. “Night landing facility is provided here. It has been made possible with sustained efforts of MP Raghavendra. This will be beneficial to the people in Central Karnataka,” he observed.

Minister M B Patil called it a historic day.
